WASHINGTON, DC & ATLANTA, GA. – During a White House induction ceremony today at 11am, Second Gentleman Douglass Emhoff will be recognizing the Atlanta-based nonprofit Caring for Others, amongst others, for improving food access to the underserved along with other organizations. Caring For Others, an Atlanta-based 501c3 with a mission to eradicate poverty, hunger and clothing insecurity, will also be awarded a grant from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) to support this mission. These leaders are working to end hunger and reduce diet-related diseases nationwide by 2030, as part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health.
Caring for Others is being recognized today as one of the shining examples helping the millions of Americans struggling with food insecurity and diet-related diseases including diabetes, obesity and hypertension.
“Twenty-five years ago, I founded Caring For Others with an unwavering goal of changing lives and communities by restoring hope and dignity to families impacted by poverty, hunger and clothing insecurity,” said Caring For Others Founder & CEO Eslene Richmond-Shockley. “Growing up in an impoverished area of Guyana, I never envisioned that one day I would be recognized at the White House. My team is more determined than ever to continue fighting for those who cannot fight for themselves, because poverty is a cancer. I believe that by caring for others, we create a brighter world for everyone.”
Caring For Others seeks to give voices to the faces of hunger and looks forward to significantly enhancing its impact through strategic initiatives aimed at identifying food deserts, expanding distribution networks, promoting nutritional education, empowering local communities, and opening community grocery stores.
It requires more than just the resources of the federal government to achieve the White House’s ambitious goal of improving food access to those in need. Last summer the White House launched a nationwide call to action to meet the ambitious goals laid out by President Biden. At least $2.5 billion will be invested in start-up companies that are pioneering solutions to hunger and food insecurity. Over four billion dollars will be dedicated toward philanthropy that improves access to nutritious food, promotes healthy choices, and increases physical activity.
According to a White House statement, the commitment by Caring For Others and the additional recipients demonstrate the tremendous impact that is possible when all sectors of society come together in service of a common goal.
“Together with our partners, Caring For Others commits to providing more than nine million pounds annually of fresh and nutritious fruits, vegetables and protein to thousands of families in need by 2030,” said Richmond-Shockley. “With this generous CDC grant, we are eager to expand our services to new markets across the country to ensure more people living in hunger can live with dignity.”
Caring For Others is committed to giving those in need a chance to live with dignity by restoring hope and providing the tools and resources required to break the cycle of poverty and, ultimately, sustain an overall improved quality of life.
From its humble beginnings 25 years ago, Caring For Others has launched numerous programs including Feeding Atlanta, No Bare Soles, Disaster Relief, Comfort & Care, Christmas in September, and ERS Scholarship Fund. Additionally, the nonprofit has expanded internationally into Antigua, Belize, Guyana, Guatemala, and the Philippines with microeconomic community empowerment loans, as well as much-needed household goods and clothing.
The organization’s annual International Poverty Forum will be held in Atlanta from March 21-22, 2024. The Forum facilitates a poverty-eradicating “think tank” of some of the greatest minds and service providers in the world. This group instills hope and opportunity worldwide, where solutions are envisioned, deployed, and supported through corporate and non-profit engagement. This year’s keynote will be Rich Paul, with other speakers to include Tim Tebow and Demi-Leigh Tebow.
In March 2023, the Biden-Harris Administration announced the White House Challenge to End Hunger and Build Healthy Communities. The Challenge was a nationwide call-to-action to stakeholders across all of society to make bold commitments to advance President Biden’s goal to end hunger and reduce diet-related diseases by 2030—all while reducing disparities. The Challenge was built on the historic White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health hosted by President Biden in in September 2022 where the President released a National Strategy, and announced over $8 billion of external commitments to achieve his bold goal.
